We already know the importance of learning languages nowadays. It means keeping up with the world’s pace, not being left out of the system. Yes, English is a must. However, if you are a native English speaker, you cannot afford being monolingual, even if everyone else speaks your language. Speaking a second language opens up your mind, showing you a whole new world where you can submerge and discover new things every day. In fact, our history owes a lot to Italian, the closest language to Latin of all the Romance Languages. For example, Dante’s The Divine Comedy, published in the 14th century, is regarded as the source of The Tuscan dialect, which at the same time is the foothold of Standard Italian. In fact, the first edition of an official Italian vocabulary, when dictionaries did not exist, was built on the basis of the Divine Comedy, by Dante, Decameron, by Bocaccio and Canzionere by Petrarca. There are so many interesting facts about Italy that everyone should visit it at least once in their lives. Can you imagine doing so and being able to speak the language? Well, this would change the whole experience for sure. History lovers can take Italian lessons in London, where a native Italian speaking trainer will conduct classes according to your personal needs and interests, while providing all the necessary material.

Italian is a Romance language mainly spoken in Europe, but also by immigrant communities in the Americas and Australia. As a mother tongue, it is spoken by 65 million people in the EU, according to the European Union.

History lovers also choose French when thinking of learning a language. Its vocabulary and style has been influenced by movements such as romanticism and realism, and its grammar has remained practically unchanged since the late 17th century. The history of French language is very close to ours, did you know, for instance, that about a third to a half of basic English words come from French? Some examples include pedigree, view, challenge, war, pride and view. We are not even mentioning how fantastic the language sounds to the ear and how sophisticated it is to the listeners. It is important to mention here that when visiting France, everyone expects that you speak the language. In other words, you may come off as a rude person if you try to communicate in English. Speaking French will definitely spare you a hard time.

You can start by taking French lessons in Cambridge, where you will be able to take your lesson any day of the week including weekends, at any time of the day whether it be morning, afternoon or evening.

IMPORTANCE OF READING COMPREHENSION IN SECOND LANGUAGE LEARNING

Fry (1965, p. 24) writes the following words about comprehension:

It is very difficult to define comprehension. Reduced to its simplest elements we might say that comprehension is a part of the communication process of getting the thoughts that were in the author’s mind into the reader’s mind. This is a difficult process because it involves the transmission of an idea through several imperfect media. For example, the author must have a clear idea in his mind, then reduce this idea to written language; this will be printed; and finally the reader looks at the printed word and forms an idea.

Reading can be thought of as being on two levels at once. First of all the reader should get the objective information i.e. facts. According to Fry (1965, p. 26) these facts require little interpretation or judgment. Then on a higher level, the reader should be able to get subjective information, i.e. the tone and the mood of the story, unstated ideas or the overall information. “It might only hint at other situations with which the reader is supposed to be familiar. Or the reader might be expected to generalize from the specific facts given, in order to get a main idea …” (p. 27).

Authors may not state the main purpose of a piece of writing. It is for the reader to bring his background knowledge and thinking ability to get the main idea. “Readers who can only read facts and nothing more can never be called good readers.” On the other hand, readers who can get the facts seldom get the subjective points (ibid.). While teaching reading comprehension, the teacher must always keep in mind that the goal is to understand what the author meant (p. 26).

Davis (2008) writes that undoubtedly students of any language need to be able to read in that language. However, it is not very clear what is exactly meant by reading. Native speakers read a big deal of material each day depending largely on their motivation for reading. Reading in a foreign language is a very useful and relatively painless way to improve the command over the target language. When students already have a thorough understanding of the basic structure and vocabulary of the language, they are able to tackle and enjoy authentic texts on subjects of their interest.

The benefits of reading widely and relatively long texts are enormous for students with a relatively high level of proficiency in the language. They have different needs and different problems from those which they faced at lower educational levels. As they have already studied the vast majority of structures and ways of expressing meaning in English, these students need to be well familiar with the intricacies of these structures, rather than learning ever more. Through reading they can have better understanding of “the subtleties and shades of meaning carried by the use of a particular choice of words in a particular context.” Grammatical Structures and vocabulary can be learned easily through reading a lot. While students are about to complete their formal study of the “structural elements of English”, vocabulary will continue growing (ibid.).

Hussain (2005, p.110) writes that a person who comprehends English language has the following capabilities:

He can read at normal speed. He is able to understand “the lexical and the structural meanings of the words, phrases and sentences.” He can “take in complete phrases or groups of words at once and when reading aloud, use appropriate sounds, juncture, stress and intonation pattern.” He can guess the meaning of unfamiliar words while reading a text. If he is unable to guess the meaning of an unfamiliar word, he can find out it in a dictionary. He can skip unnecessary information while skimming. He is able to read silently without moving his lips. He is able to differentiate between opinion and facts. He can locate the topic sentence in a paragraph. He can make a summary of important points. He can distinguish between various moods of the writer. He can recognize the meanings of various graphic signals such as punctuation marks, etc.

Aebersold and Field (1997, p. 15) write that reading is what happens when people look at a text and assign meaning to the written symbols in that text. The text and the reader are two physical entities necessary for the reading process to begin. It is, however, the interaction between the text and the reader that constitutes actual reading.

The “attainment of simple reading” is not the quest. An insight, compassion, open – mindedness and tolerance must be developed. So many of young readers are interested only in fast – paced thrillers, which leave little room for reflection. Such readers when asked to read a classic agitate with loud groans (Pervez, 2008, p. 21).

Buzen (1997, pp. 33 – 34), on the other hand, defines reading as a process involving following seven steps:

Recognition i.e. the knowledge of the alphabetical symbols. This step takes place the instant before the physical reading begins. Assimilation – by which light is reflected from the word received by the eye and transmitted, via the optic nerve, to the brain. Intra – integration – a process equivalent to the basic comprehension, referring to the linking of all parts of the information being read with all other appropriate parts. Extra – integration i.e. bringing of previous knowledge to the material being read and making appropriate connections, analyzing, appreciating, selecting and reading. Retention i.e. the basic storage of information. Recall i.e. being able to get back from the storage whenever and whatever is needed. Communication i.e. the use to which the information is immediately or eventually put.

Reading is indeed very important in learning a foreign language. To give reading its due importance in Pakistani system of language learning, it is a dire need of time to understand the importance of reading in second language learning with particular to learning English as a second language. Language skills are usually grouped as receptive skills i.e. reading and listening, and productive skills i.e. speaking and writing. “People who use a language have a number of sub – skills within each of the four main skills.” (Lucantoni, 2001, p. 4)

The basic purpose of reading in first language learning is somehow different from that of second language learning. “In FL [Foreign Language] learning, reading is often used for purposes which are different from those found in mother – tongue. The most typical use of reading in a foreign language class is to teach the language itself.” In this way, vocabulary, structures and other things can be learnt through reading in a foreign language and to extend command over that particular language (Nuttall, 1982, p. 19).

Elley & Manghubai (1983) write that the effect of differences between learning of mother language and second language, in formal education, can be eliminated by means of a reading program based on the use of an abundance of high – interest illustrated story books and that high – interest story reading has an important role to play in second language learning. The pupils which, in their study, were exposed to wider reading progressed in reading and listening comprehension at

Language learning or language acquisition is the process by which humans learn or acquire a language and this is the leading aspect that distinguishes humans from other species. Language itself has cognitive, social, cultural and physical aspects attached to it. This defines the vastness of a language, as it is not just a means of communication but a process of interaction, information, communication and a motor skill.

Language learning as mentioned earlier is a process that blends one stage into another. Certain principles and language learning techniques are discussed below:

Techniques

There are many language learning techniques that have been developed by the pioneers in the language learning scenario. Some of these effective techniques are:

Drills: using of the drills technique focuses on one feature or set of the language. This means that repetitively doing a particular process till it is reproduced without errors. Activities that present a model must be performed till mastery is gained. Simple correction is not as effective as reinforcement. The language learning techniques recommend the usage of visuals like slides, pictures, magazines, real life situations, stick figures and student position in relation to the helper, for new text drills.

Enhancement of learning and motivation: an effective language learning technique is the enhancement of learning by introducing drama. This means any form of drama like videos, simple setups for the model text or free expressions all done by the students. Another effective technique is the usage of direct dialogue in the form of question and answer or comment and response. This initiates the student to respond or ask questions and can be corrected for a mistake.

Comprehension exercises: these exercises are effective in making the learner learn special words or words for various physical actions. The teacher can give commands for the physical actions that can be performed within the class limits and these could be individual action commands or group action commands.

Directed comprehension drills: in this language learning technique the teacher commands the student to give instructions or commands to other students, in a way involving the class. Here it is important to remember that the instructions used in the classes should always be in the new language and could be the variants to the words like good, read, open books, try again, write and listen.

Social context: any language if learnt with the social context in mind is easier to understand and learn. Therefore the language should be practiced in the cultural setting. The teacher can bring the student’s needs from real life situation to the classroom session. In this way, a student would find it comfortable to confront the situation if it occurs again.
Kinetic learning: this technique of language learning refers to the communication that is associated with action, movement or event. Kinetic learning has a higher place value than visual or verbal learning.
Thus these are the techniques that are effective in language learning. Besides these techniques there are certain principles which are as important to understand in the concept of language learning. The natural leaning sequence as followed by all facilitates learning and is the most effective form of learning; hearing, speaking, reading and writing.

Having studied langugages for nearly 20 years, I’ve learned a thing or two about what works and what doesn’t. Here are 5 common myths:

Myth 1: It’s impossible to learn a language fast.

Not true at all. I know many people in adulthood who have picked up a language in amazingly fast time. And no, they don’t all have IQs of 180! In fact, most just have a valid reason, such as work advancement. You just need the right motivation, and you too can learn fast.

For many language learners we have worked with, fluency implies an ease and fluidity of expression in the target language. And you would probably need to add to the mix ease in understanding everything said by others in the target language. Plus everything that you read. Plus perhaps everything you write in the new language too. The list could go on. We would agree that for most mortals it’s not possible to achieve fluency of this kind in a few weeks or months.

You CAN, however, achieve ‘conversational fluency’ in a matter of weeks or months.

Myth 2: It’s much easier to learn a language as a child.

a lot has happened in the last half century, and there’s been a substantial amount of new research that pokes big holes in the ‘critical period’ idea. It has fallen out of favor with psychologists and language specialists alike, which means you can no longer use your adulthood as an excuse not to learn a language. In fact, a number of studies have demonstrated the exact opposite: that when exposure time to a new language is controlled, adults actually learn FASTER than children!

This makes perfect sense. Think about it. Adults have a couple of obvious advantages over children who are learning their first language. Adults know infinitely more about the world; they understand that there are such things as ‘rules’ and ‘conventions’ and that these rules govern the way all languages work.

So don’t let this common myth stop you, whatever your age, from pursuing a new language. There are so many reasons TO learn a language–these myths are but a few erroneous reasons not to!

Myth 3: The best way to learn a language is to go to that foreign country and immerse, immerse, immerse…

Immersion is a very fashionable word when it comes to concocting language learning catch-phrases. And for good reason. Surrounding oneself with other native speakers and being forced to communicate in the target language most if not all of the time is a powerful way to learn a second language.

But here’s the thing: you don’t need to go to Germany to immerse yourself in German, Italy to immerse yourself in Italian, Korea to immerse yourself in Korean, and so on. This belief just puts another obstacle in your path, and gives you an all-too-tidy excuse not to take your language learning seriously in the meantime.

There are several reasons that undo the foreign country immersion myth. First of all, there are plenty of ways in which you can recreate – or ‘simulate’ – a productive sense of immersion in the language. That’s because you live in a digital culture where all kinds of resources from all kinds of places are available to you on your personal computer.

Secondly, it’s certainly not a BAD idea to immerse, but who has all the time and money to do this? Moving to another country takes a lot of time and resources, and requires sacrifice like very few other things: you’re giving up time from your family and friends, time from your job, giving up precious savings…

So, you ask, what IS the best way to learn?

In general, the best courses will be able to combine:

1) the power of multimedia technology;
2) a clear and up-to-date method of instruction; and
3) a sense of enjoyment and play…

The best courses will also provide you with a suggested learning path, but at the
same time be flexible enough to allow you to do things your own way. They will
be invaluable in giving you simulated conversational practice when the real thing
is not within earshot.

For my money, Rocket German, by the fantastic Rocket Languages team, is the best, fastest, and most enjoyable way to learn German. It covers beginner’s to advanced levels and costs far less than a beginner’s course (you can spend over 0 at most universities just to get the basics!), and about a 25% of the price of JUST Rosetta Stone Level 1 (about 0 just for Beginner’s German!!).

It’s a good deal, and one that any serious learner should jump on.

I hope this helps! Enjoy whatever path you take, and good luck.

The reason you have found your way to this article is because you are wondering what is the best language learning software on the market today! Right? The truth is, there is not one specific language software that will be the best for each and every person! And there are many factors that go into determining which software is best for you and why. If you will take a few moments and finish reading this article, I assure you that you will have a strong heading to guide you to a specific language learning software that best suites you and your learning strengths.

Based on my personal analysis of several different language learning software programs, there are four software programs that really stand out. Each of these learning language software programs have their own teaching styles. The four software programs that I am referring too are Tell Me More, Fluenz, Rocket Languages, and Rosetta Stone.

There are a number of factors we took into consideration when determining which of the software programs above is the best language learning software program. These factors include pricing, teaching methods and styles, tools, and additional accessories such as games.

If you are interested in a teaching program that is low in price and contains several games then I recommend you look at the Rocket Languages software program. Rocket Languages specializes in 11 different languages including sign language. The program can be downloaded directly to your computer or shipped to your home. Having the software shipped to your home is a couple hundred dollars more expensive. So you may prefer to stick with the downloadable material. The major fall back to this software program is that it is mostly an audio program. You have the games, including a vocabulary game that helps develop your vocabulary, but the majority of the program is audio. But you are still getting a superb program for only if you decide to go with the download.

Rosetta Stone is another big language learning software that you hear about all the time. It seems like every time you turn on the TV that you see a Rosetta Stone commercial! Rosetta Stone is a great product and they offer a lot of software tools and learning material. The major drawback that I see with the Rosetta Stone’s software program is that it teaches you as if you were learning your native language for the first time. You may be thinking, “What could be so hard about that?” What makes this teaching method so hard is that you learn by looking at pictures and then hearing or seeing the foreign language word along with it. There’s no English translation! Rosetta Stone has designed this program so that you can learn various words pertaining to different objects and eventually develop those words into sentences and conversations. The problem with this method is that it will probably take a long time and a lot of us don’t have years to wait for our language skills to develop with Rosetta Stone. Don’t let me sway you away from looking into Rosetta Stone if this is the method in which you learn best. Go with what you know works for you and you will find the success that you are looking for.

Fluenz is another exceptional language learning software program. This program has been designed to take the headache out of learning. Fluenz has done this by eliminating lots of drop down menus and other buttons that you may see on your screen during the learning process. Basically allowing the software program to easily guide you through each lesson. In addition, Fluenz is rated extremely high among its users. There are a lot of users that are very happy with this program because of its simplicity. Other great features of Fluenz include progress tracking, iPod/MP3 compatibility, personalized learning paths and speech recognition. But one of the down sides to Fluenz is that the program developers choose not to include any games, test or quizzes. The reason the designers choose not to implement any test or quizzes for the software program is because the designers felt it best that the individual repeat various lessons until they have mastered the material. Sometimes people can just go in to a testing situation and do well on a test by simply being lucky. This method eliminates that likely outcome and encourages a complete mastery of the study material.

As awesome as the Fluenz language learning software program is, my absolute favorite is the Tell Me More software program! The program includes all the perks of the Fluenz software program mentioned above with the addition to games, quizzes and test. Something that should be noted here is that Tell Me More’s personalized learning path tool is extremely awesome! It has three different modes that you can choose from. The Free-to-Roam, The Guided Mode and the Dynamic Mode. The Free-to-Roam mode allows you to do what you very well please. So if you want to work on one specific area of a specific lesson then you can. The Guided mode will guide you through your lessons one at a time. The Dynamic Mode is the coolest of all! This mode will analyze your previous scores and progress, and then adapts your future lessons to focus on the areas that you performed weakest in a previous lesson. Essentially, allowing you to develop your weaker areas. The major downside to this software program is that it’s only available in windows operating systems. If you have a mac then I am really sorry. Just pray that the designers of Tell Me More come out with a mac version in the very near future.

As you can see each of the programs are different in their own ways. So it is definitely beneficial to look a little closer to pick out the details that can make a software program right for you. If you interested in learning Spanish with one of these programs and want a closer look then feel free to check out one of the links in the authors bio box. Thanks and have a great day!
